Looking to attract more visitors to your website? Find out what people have been searching for the most.

Every day Google mines billions of search statistics for trends and patterns, and every year it releases an overview of top searches. For business owners and webmasters, it’s a good indication of what people want online. Of course, it’s not necessarily possible to give people everything they want on your website, but knowing the trends can help you to shape your site’s content in such a way as to take advantage of search trends and attract more traffic.

Google’s Zeitgeist 2007 list of top keyword searches reads like a shopping list of must-have technology and must-dish celebrities. Here’s the rundown on what people searched for most in 2007.

Top Overall Searches

Unsurprisingly, Apple dominated global searches with the launch of the iPhone, putting “iphone” in the top spot for fastest-rising searches of 2007. It was joined by social networking havens Facebook, YouTube, Second Life, and Club Penguin, which all secured spots in the top 10 searches.

Top of Mind and Heart

According to search data, Googlers were seeking answers to the following questions last year. Who is God? Who is Jesus? And conversely, who is Satan?

They also wondered what is love, and somewhat ironically, what is sap? Finally, they sought all kinds of instructional info, specifically on how to kiss, how to draw, how to knit, how to skateboard, and most ambitiously, how to levitate.

Top Trends

US search data revealed the most popular trends in 2007. Top gaming trends by search volume included competing gaming consoles the Ninetendo Wii, Sony Xbox and Playstation 3, while over in TV land, HD DVD battled Blu Ray and came out on top.

In the music world, searches on iTunes trumped searches on Bittorrent and Limewire, while the mosquito ringtone proved the most popular sound search.

In the food and fitness categories, pilates and yoga dominated top searches, while searches for the master cleanse recipe were followed in popularity by searches for a ratatouille recipe.

Top Celeb Searches

Britney Spears’ ongoing antics made her the top celeb search on Google, followed closely by Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan. Meanwhile Dancing with the Stars was as popular online as it was on TV, along with Heroes, Lost and House.

Meanwhile, Transformers, 300 and The Simpsons Movie topped the cinematic searches, and Rihanna topped music lyric searches, with Web phenom Souljaboy snagging the #2 lyrics search spot.
